The Mayflower ship

With so many events taking place in Nottinghamshire throughout the year, there'll be something to interest you. Don't miss the following events in the north of the county...

The Pilgrim Fathers 400th Anniversary Festival from 22 - 25 November 2007 saw an exciting weekend of themed events in and around Pilgrim Country. Organised by The Pilgrim Fathers UK Origins Association, the events celebrated the 400th anniversary of the Separatists leaving the area for Holland.

The festival started with A talk on the Pilgrim Fathers by Sue Allan. The celebrated author of 'The Mayflower Maid' and 'Jamestown Woman' talked about the importance of the Pilgrim Fathers, her books, and recent visits to America. Also on 22 November was a Thanksgiving Dinner served at The Pilgrim Fathers in Scrooby, the village where William Brewster was born.

In An afternoon with Dr Jeremy Bangs, the celebrated historian and curator of the American Pilgrim Museum in Leiden led a thought provoking debate entitled "Pilgrim Fathers - oppressors or oppressed?" He also introduced the official Pilgrim Fathers Origins 1607 Celebration Dinner by recounting the trials that faced the early settlers in America. The traditional three course Thanksgiving dinner was served accompanied by period entertainment from Doncaster Waites.

The weekend concluded with traditional Morning Service in the historic village of Scrooby, the Pilgrim Fathers Harvest Food and Craft Fair at Tuxford Windmill, and Evensong Service at Babworth Church where Richard Clyfton led the Separatists before 1605. Email Sandra Withington to find out more about the celebrations and further events to be held in Pilgrim Country.
